Hamilton County Firefighters Battle A Fully Involved Fire

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn - Wednesday, April 23,2008 - 4:35 pm - The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department was alerted of a structure fire at 6827 Buck Trail in the Deer Wood Subdivision off of Highway 58. Before fire units could even arrive on the scene a sheriffs deputy and an EMS supervisor that had been looking for the smoke column reported the structure to be 3/4 involved with heavy fire.

The first arriving engine company confirmed a heavily involved residential structure. That first company immediately pulled an inch and 3/4 hose line and started a primary attack, unfortunately due to the advancement of the fire they were not making any headway. Within seconds, an additional engine company and Highway 58's new Quint arrived on the scene bringing a supply hose from a hydrant nearly 1000 feet away.

There was nobody home at the time of the fire, however the house was owned by Sam Woolwine, well known sports writer for the Times Free Press. Mr. Woolwine was said to have had one of the largest collections of sports memorabilia in the area. The collection was worth an untold large amount of money. Unfortunately all of which was completely destroyed by the fire.

Fire crews battled the fire with their new half a million dollar Quint and several hand lines fore some time before it was brought under control. The house was totally destroyed by the time the fire was extinguished. There was also a car in the garage, a Lexus, that was destroyed by the fire. In all the estimated value of loss was around $500,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
