DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Sunday, August 15,2010 - 5:15am - A call came in to
the Dade County 9-1-1 dispatcher, reporting the South Dade Hardware Store on
Highway 11 was burning. The dispatcher immediately knocked out South Dade,
Trenton and New Salem Fire Departments. Within seconds, several engine
companies from all three departments were responding. Before they got on the
scene, a Dade County Sheriffs Officer reported that he could see the fire
from Interstate 59 more than a mile away.
Moments later, the first engine company
arrived on the scene and confirmed heavy involvement to the Rising Fawn Feed
and Supply building. Crews quickly started pulling primary attack lines.
meanwhile, several additional engine companies were arriving on the scene.
Firefighters took the scene by storm, knocking the flames down in short
order. Crews worked the blaze rapidly gaining control of the fire very
quickly. Firefighters had a fire hydrant fairly close on highway 11, giving
them an endless water supply extremely fast.
In less than an hour the blaze that could
be see for miles was under control. Crews did however spend several hours
wetting down hot spots to make sure the fire would not rekindle. The exact
cause of the fire is still under investigation.
