DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Friday, July 23,2010 - 7:15 am - A Dade County
Sheriffs Officer was traveling South on Highway 11, when the vehicle
traveling south a short distance in front of him suddenly collided head on
with a northbound van. The Sheriffs officer immediately called for fire and
rescue units. North Dade and Trenton Fire units were dispatched with a
Lifeguard Medic unit to the scene of the crash on Highway 11 at the
intersection of Carol Lane.
The first rescue unit to arrive on the scene was North Dade Battalion 41,
operated by assistant chief Chris Lowrance. Chief Lowrance immediately set
up command and gave an initial report of a two vehicle accident with one
person injured. Chief Lowrance also reported negative entrapment and
canceled the response of the Trenton Fire Department. In short order, North
Dade Rescue 4 and the Lifeguard Medic unit arrived on the scene.
Firefighters and medics quickly worked together to package and load the
driver of the car into the Lifeguard ambulance. The driver of the van said
he was uninjured, however he did say the his leg was a little sore. He
refused treatment at the scene. A fire hydrant was struck by the car as it
came to rest on the shoulder of the roadway. Georgia State Patrol is
investigating the crash, at this time it is unclear as to why the vehicle
heading south crossed the center line and collided with the northbound van.
