Bradley County Rescuers Work A Horrific Afternoon Crash

BRADLEY COUNTY, Tenn -Friday, February 8,2007 - 4:00 pm - First Responders and emergency workers with the Bradley County Fire Department and Bradley County Rescue were dispatched to a crash, between a semi truck and a flatbed rollback wrecker, on Spring Place Road at Mason Road. Before rescuers could even arrive on the scene, Bradley County Sheriffs Officers were reporting a serious situation with major entrapment. Within minutes, Rescuers arrived and got their first look at the horrific scene they were faced with.

A witness said that the semi tractor trailer, loaded with logs, was traveling north on Spring Place Road. The rollback wrecker was pulling onto Spring Place Road. The witness was not exactly sure on the particulars of who had the right of way or how fast they were going, but the semi truck struck the rollback, flipping it over on it’s top. At this point bought of the vehicles slid off the roadway and across a ditch line. When the semi and the wrecker came to rest, the tractor was on top of the over turned wrecker.

Rescuer immediately determined this was going to be a major extrication. Crews quickly called for more help, including a large rescue recovery wrecker from Doug Yates Wrecker Service in Chattanooga. Rescue workers quickly started setting up air bags and power hydraulics to start working their way into the wreckage. The driver of the wrecker was not only trapped, but he was inside and under the wreckage so bad that crews could not get to him immediately.

Rescue crews had an obvious grim outlook on the end result of the extricate and after about thirty minutes of work to free the driver their fears became reality. The driver had been fatally injured on impact. Emergency workers distraught faces reflected the displeasure with not being able to save the mans life. Officers with the Tennessee State Patrol are investigating the crash.
