DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Saturday, February 7,2009 - Firefighters from several
departments came together in the Davis Community for a search and rescue
training session. The session was actually part of a Mod 1 class given by
the Davis Fire Department under the direction of Susan Waters. The class is
part of a federal grant received to train new firefighters. The Davis Fire
Department graciously opened the grant to all the Dade County Fire
Departments.A total of 14
firefighters from several departments including Trenton, North Dade, West
Brow, New Salem and Davis all attended the training. with the help of two
additional instructors, Jerry Henegar and Bobby Dunn, firefighters got to
make entry and perform a search around an interior. Of course the atmosphere
was not that of a real fire, however the firefighters masks were blacked out
to try an create a likeness of the real thing.
Crews entered the structure in either a
right or left hand search looking for possible victims. After locating a
victim the crew had to work together to get the victim back to the door. The
instructors used this opportunity to observe how the firefighters reacted as
well as pointing out important improvements in techniques.
In all the class was said to have been a
real successes. With classes like this training new firefighters it brings
more protection and assistance to the fire service and local communities.
