CATOOSA COUNTY, Georgia - Monday, May 19,2008 - 7:30 am - Catoosa County
Engine 3 requested assistance from EMS and rescuer for an accident they had
just been involved in. With dense fog in the area of Highway 41 just south
of the Tennessee State Line the fire engine had been struck in the side by a
car traveling north on 41 Highway. The fire engine was pulling out of a
service station and had already been half way across the five lane roadway
when it was struck, according to a witness.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene quickly and started treating the
patient driving the car. Rescuers worked quickly to extricate the man from
the vehicle. Luckily, none of the firefighters were injured in the crash.
The three firefighters that were on the engine were obviously shaken by the
crash, but quickly ran to the aid of the injured driver.
EMS crews and firefighters carefully loaded the man into an ambulance and
rushed him to the hospital. At this point it is unclear how much of a factor
the fog played in the crash, but officers with the Georgia State Patrol are
investigating. Engine 3 did sustain heavy damage to the pump panel and side
of the engine, rendering the engine out of service.
