Dade County Fire Crews Battle A Heavily Involved Structure Fire

DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Monday, June 9,2008 - Just after 3:00 pm - North Dade County Fire Department was alerted of a possible structure fire at 1121 Duggan Loop, near the Slygo Community. The first fire unit to arrive on scene was North Dade County Battalion 41. Battalion 41 was driven by assistant Chief Chris Lowrance. Chief Lowrance immediately gave a first report of heavy smoke showing from a two story residential structure. As the chief started a walk around the first engine company arrived on the scene.

Firefighters quickly pulled an inch and ¾ hose line to start a primary attack. Meanwhile, the chief completed his walk around an updated his report. Chief Lowrance reported heavy fire had self vented through the roof of the rear of the structure and the house was 75% involved. An immediate call for additional assistance was requested to the scene, bringing crews from the New Home and Trenton Fire Departments.

Fire crews were forced to back out of the structure during the interior attack, due to a partial collapse. After a short exterior battle, crews were able to reenter the structure and continue with an aggressive knock down. Firefighters from all three departments battled the blaze for over an hour before they were able to completely extinguish it. Crews continued wetting down hot spots for over two hours after the blaze was dowsed.

A mother and child were at home when the fire broke out, but luckily they were both able to escape without injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall. The house was consider a total lose. A medic unit with Hutcheson EMS did standby at the scene while crews battled the blaze.
