Fire Department was alerted of a structure fire at 510 E. 5th Street.
Several people including some UTC Students reported the three story building
on fire when they spotted smoke and flames shooting from the roof. Within
minutes, several fire crews arrived on the scene and started a primary
attack through the front door of the building.
Several additional fire crews were on the
scene in minutes and assisted with pulling hose lines through the building
to the upstairs floor. Within just a few minutes firefighters were obviously
gaining ground as the flames started to subside and the smoke started
turning white. Firefighters did report extreme temperatures on the roof of
the building, however they did not let it slow their aggressive attack on
the blaze.
Luckily nobody was injured in the fire,
all the occupants were evacuated by the UTC students and some city workers
that initially spotted the fire. The fire was contained to the upstairs,
however the other floors did sustain some water and smoke damage. The fire
was brought under control in about thirty minutes. The exact cause is still
under investigation.
