CHATTANOOGA, Tenn - Thursday, April
22,2010 - 10:30 am - City of Chattanooga Fire
Department dispatched several engine companies, including engine 9, to a
reported residential structure fire on 12 Ave. at the intersection of 30
street. When engine 9 arrived on the scene they reported heavy smoke showing
from a single story residential home. Witnesses quickly told firefighters
they believed someone might still be inside the house. Firefighters quickly
made an aggressive search effort, but realize nobody was still in the home,
meanwhile additional fire units were arriving and crews worked quickly to
start an attack on the fast moving fire.
Within minutes it was obvious that the firefighters were gaining the upper
hand on the fire. However fire command did request an additional fire
company to the scene for additional man power. Crews were quickly knocking
the flames down and making the situation more stable. Numerous witnesses
watched as firefighters gained the knockdown and brought the fire under
control. Hamilton County EMS units were called to the scene early on as a
safety precaution and also just in case someone was still inside.
Firefighters had a rather difficult time completely extinguishing the fire
due to the fact that it had traveled into an attic area that had very little
access.
Fire crews did cut a hole in the roof to finally
put the fire out. City of Chattanooga Police had to shut down several
intersections in the area due to the large fire hoses that crews were using
for a water supply to battle the fire. The exact cause of the blaze is not
know at this time but is still under investigation. Witnesses said the smoke
column from the fire could be seen from miles away. The home did sustain a
large amount of damage from the fire and is not livable at this time.
