Gas tanker crashes and burns Killing The Driver

DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Tuesday, December 22,2008 - 12:30 pm - The rig crashed in the 15000 block Highway 157 (Lula Lake Road) on Lookout Mountain near Cloudland, Georgia, Monday afternoon. The truck belonged to Florida Rock and Tank lines.

The Georgia State Patrol says the truck driver, not yet publicly identified, apparently lost control of his rig and left the roadway. The trailer loaded with about 6,000 gallons of gasoline burst into flames.

Pep Grimes whose office, Lookout Mountain Real Estate, located near the crash scene, says the accident happened shortly after noon Monday. He said "We heard a loud 'boom' and the windows shook. We thought it might have been a sonic boom or a small earthquake or someone blasting rock. It was followed by several more explosions. A neighbor came rushing into our office saying that an 'eighteen-wheeler' had wrecked and exploded and to call 911, which we did. Then we all went out to see what was happening and saw all the black smoke and the wreckage just up the road from our office."

No other vehicles were believed involved in the accident but the Georgia State Patrol is continuing its investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
