Firefighters Meet With Their Own Entrapment Situation

FORT OGLETHORPE, Georgia - Tuesday, February 20,2008 - 10:00 pm - Just after 10 o’clock Catoosa County Fire Dispatch alerted Fort Oglethorpe Station 1 and 10 of a vehicle fire on Mineral Avenue, just off Cloud Springs Road. Just seconds after the initial call was dispatched, the call was updated, the vehicle had caught the house on fire and reports said flames were already heavily involving the home. With the new update, Catoosa County Dispatch resounded tones and also added Fort Oglethorpe station 8 to the assignment.

Within seconds of the update the first fire unit, Chief Marlin Thompson (906), arrived on the scene and reported heavy involvement to the “C/D” side of the structure. Fort Oglethorpe Engine 1 arrived on the scene right behind the chief. Firefighters quickly pulled two inch and ¾ hose line and initiated a primary attack through the front door. Meanwhile, Ladder 1 and Engine 10 where arriving on the scene. Engine 10 brought a supply hose from a fire hydrant. The additional firefighters joined in the fire attack.

Fort Oglethorpe Hose 1 arrived on the scene in short order and was advised by command to ventilate the roof of the structure. Just after roof operations were started, radio traffic was frigidly broken by a may-day call from firefighters inside the structure. All operational radio traffic was absolutely silent as the firefighters calling the may-day tried to describe where they were and what happen. Command immediately requested a second alarm assignment to the scene, in addition to another medic unit and an available air ambulance. Command quickly engaged the firefighters over the radio. Meanwhile, all operations turned to retrieving the firefighters from the structure.

Within minutes, Firefighters that were where working rear operation brought the firefighters to safety. Shortly after the firefighters were brought out of the structure and checked out by EMS crews, the fire was brought under control. Unfortunately, due to the stage the fire was in when firefighters arrived and the heavy fire load inside the structure, the home was all but totally destroyed.
