DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Saturday, May 15,2010 - 2:00 am - New Salem Volunteer
Fire Department was dispatched to a tractor trailer crash in the second
horse shoe curve going up the west side of Lookout Mountain on Highway 136.
Initial reports were that the semi tractor trailer was overturned in the
curve and the driver was possibly injured. Within minutes, several fire
units were responding to the scene. The dispatcher quickly told the
responding units that the truck was loaded with non-hazardous materials,
possibly brick.
Dade County Sheriffs Officers arrived on the scene first and reported no
injuries. Officers also confirmed the semi was overturned in the curve. Fire
units arrived on the scene shortly there after and started checking for
leaks and spills. Meanwhile, Sheriffs Officers quickly opened the road to
allow the backed up traffic to clear out while waiting for a wrecker crew
and a Highway Patrol Officer to investigate.
The semi turned over on the shoulder of the road an therefore did not pose a
problem with traffic until crews arrived to clean it up. Unfortunately with
little to no additional room in the sharp curve, the roadway did have to be
closed for the cleanup. The exact cause of the crash is under investigation
by Georgia State Patrol Officers. The cleanup took several hours.
