CHATTANOOGA, Tenn - Wednesday, October 9, 2009 - 9:40 pm - City of
Chattanooga Firefighters and medics with Hamilton County EMS rushed to the
scene of a crash on North Access Road at the DuPont Parkway exit ramp. The
driver was pinned inside the wreckage from the neck down when the first
police officer arrived on the scene. Firefighters arrived seconds later and
began extricating the victim by cutting the roof off the car and then pried
open the driver's door. Firefighters also extinguished a small fire that
broke out in the engine compartment.
A black Honda Civic driven by a man at an
apparent high rate of speed, crossed the centerline, sped into a grassy area
on the opposite side of the road, slammed head-on into and knocked down a
steel utility pole and then slid into a second steel pole sideways before
coming to a halt. The driver is believed to have had a faint breath as
Hamilton County EMS medics rushed him to Erlanger Hospital's emergency room.
He appeared to be in very critical condition at best.
Police were busy trying to determine why
the driver lost control of the small car on such as straight, quiet and
lighted stretch of road. The investigation into the crash continued on into
the night.
