DADE COUNTY, Georgia - Tuesday, September 28,2010 - 6:30 am - Trenton and
New Salem Fire Crews were called to an accident on Highway 136 near Trenton.
Within minutes, the first fire unit was on the scene and reported heavy
entrapment. A Life Guard medic unit arrived just as quick and reported the
patient was extremely critical. Life Guard medics immediately requested an
air ambulance from Erlanger Medical Center, however due to weather
conditions Life Force could not fly.
Just a couple months prior to this incident,
the Trenton Fire Department conducted an Advanced Extrication class in
preparation for just such an event. The responding crew from New Salem Fire
Department also participated in the class. This was going to be a good
opportunity to find out if the class was effective. Just like clock work as
the crews arrived on scene they started their assigned operations. Within
minutes, the patient was freed and medics were tending to him.
The cause of the crash itself is still
under investigation. Highway 136 was shut down due to the crash and remained
that way for most of the day while crews worked to clean up the wreckage.
