August 18,2004 MOTORCYCLIST CRITICALLY INJURED ON DODSON AVENUE Around 4:45 pm this afternoon, City of Chattanooga Police received a 9-1-1 call that there had been an accident involving a car and a motorcycle in the 1700 block of Dodson Avenue. When first responders arrived on the scene they found a man lying on the ground with several sever injuries including a partially amputated leg and some critical head injuries. Ems crews and Firefighters with the City of Chattanooga Fire Department quickly loaded the man into an ambulance and rushed him to Erlanger Medical Center.
The investigation shows that a Blue 2002 Yamaha Motorcycle driven by 31 year old, John Miller, was traveling northbound on Dodson Ave. when a white 1993 Mercury Topaz pulled out in front of the motorcycle. The driver of the Topaz advised that once he started into the intersection he heard the motorcycle and tried stopping. Unfortunately he was not able to get his car stopped before striking the motorcycle, and this caused the motorcycle to start to slide. The motorcycle then skidded into a fire hydrant knocking it from its foundation and launching the driver from the motorcycle. The motorcyclist landed about 30 feet from the hydrant.
